Guwahati, April 3: The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) said here today that it is making concerted efforts to bring in big investments into Northeast across sectors like tourism, food processing and textile.

The CII has a large membership of 8,000 direct members and 2 lakh indirect members across the country and said it would urge potential investors to identify and invest in rapid growth sectors in the region.

It has also taken up several initiatives in skill building and education, keeping in view the national skills mission of the Centre.

CII president Naushad Forbes said, "The Northeast is full of promises and potential. This is a region where the landscape is enchantingly scenic, cultures are myriad and diverse and the people are wonderful. People from all across the world would love to visit here for a lifetime experience."

Forbes also maintained that the region can become an attractive tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors but substantial investments are needed to improve infrastructure and improve connectivity.

On law and order in the region, Forbes said it was not a concern.

He was here with CII director-general Chandrajit Banerjee who laid stress on a renewed focus on the Act East Policy saying the region is on the cusp of transformation.

Speaking on the occasion, Banerjee said, "Apart from tourism, food processing and textiles are the sectors of the future. CII will utilise its vast resources to ensure that these sectors grow in strength and substance, and most importantly, become a source of livelihood for millions of young men and women living here. We will get the support of CII, Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence and the National Institute of Design. There has been a perceptible change in the entire scenario, the most visible being the increased zeal with which the state governments are trying to attract investments across sectors."
