Shillong, March 5: Meghalaya police have filed a chargesheet against some persons involved in running a fake website in the name of a private university.
The fake website was created in the name of Techno Global University here and its web address is www.technoglobaluniversity.org, while its actual website is www.technoglobaluniversity.com.
Earlier, the university's authorities had lodged a complaint in Mawlai police station saying that a fake marksheet had been issued to an individual in the name of the university and a fake website was also created.
The superintendent of police (city), Vivek Syiem, said a chargesheet was recently filed against the accused before a court here. In 2015, a team of Meghalaya police had busted the fake website racket and arrested two persons from Bihar, Sanjeev Kumar Srivastava and his wife Pooja.
Besides the couple, the police have also named four absconders - Santosh Kumar, Md Zubbar Allam, Sanjeev Singh and Ajit Kumar - in the chargesheet.
The police team, during a search of the couple's flat, had found a room full of fake certificates and other documents of universities like Techno Global University, Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University and other institutes.
The items seized included two laptops, seals, hologram and letterheads of the university, provincial certificates, blank marksheets of CMJ University and Rs 17 lakh in cash.
The university is one of the private universities permitted to open its campus in Meghalaya after the Techno Global University Bill was passed by the state Assembly in 2008.
Asked about the fake website, Meghalaya commissioner and secretary (education) D.P. Wahlang today said he had no new information about the case but made it clear that there was no problem for the university to start its courses.
Recently, the university's authorities had vacated a building of Shillong Polytechnic at Mawlai here as the Meghalaya government had decided to establish an engineering college there.
The varsity is in the process of acquiring a new building for its temporary campus.
