Blues emerge champs - extra-time goal wins cops title

Hailakandi, Feb. 12: Assam Police Blues, Guwahati, clinched the 10th Assam Club Championship football title defeating favourites 2 Assam Special Reserve Force (ASRF), Diphu, by an extra-time goal in the final at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Hailakandi on Sunday.

After the regulation time of the keenly-contested match ended in a goalless draw, striker Amulya Das fired in the all-important goal in the extra time.

Custodians Luchan Saikia (Assam Police Blues) and Pabitra Swargiary (2 ASRF) made some spectacular saves today.

Assam Police Blues could have won the match in regulation time itself, had Kunjoy Goyari?s close range shot not missed an unguarded woodwork wide outside.

The policemen had stunned Oil India Limited 2-0 in the first semifinal, while 2 ASRF defeated holders Assam State Electricity Board, Guwahati 5-4 via tiebreakers on the way to the final.

Manoj Boro of Assam Police Blues was adjudged player of the final and Vanlal Ruata of Sporting Union, Hailakandi, who scored seven goals in the championship, was named player of the tournament.

Hailakandi Zila Parishad chairman Rahul Roy, deputy commissioner P.P. Barua and District Sports Association of Hailakandi vice-president Bijoy Kumar Dhar gave away the prizes.
