Ashmita bags top title - Assam's Angad Borchetia emerges runners-up in two events

Guwahati, Oct. 20: Assam girl Ashmita Chaliha bagged the under-15 girls’ singles title in the sub-junior national ranking badminton championship that concluded at Kanaklata Indoor Stadium here today.

The second seed local girl came back from behind to get the better of top seed Delhi girl Kanika Kanwal 13-21, 21-11, 21-15 in the finals.

The tandem of Ashmita and Kanika, however, had to contend with a silver in the under-15 doubles, going down to top seed pair of Akshita Bhandari of Uttarakhand and Shreya Bose of Kerala 21-19, 16-21, 10-21.

Arintap Dasgupta of Bengal clinched double crown in under-15 boys’ events.

The top seed won the singles title beating Rahul Bhardhvaj B.M. of Karnataka 12-21, 21-6, 21-16 and paired up with Kartikey Guldhan Kumar of Delhi to lift the doubles crown defeating Jaswanth D. of Andhra Pradesh and Dhruv Kapila of Punjab 21-19, 21-16.

Another Assam boy Angad Borchetia had to contend with the runners-up titles in under-13 boys’ singles as well as doubles.

The second seed went down to Delhi top seed boy Aakash Yadav 21-15, 16-21, 10-21 in the singles final.

Earlier, his tandem with Aakash Yadav finished runners-up in the doubles final.

Maisnam Meiraba of Manipur and Akash Thakur of Bihar clinched the title winning it 21-16, 21-16.

Fifth seed Simran Singh of Maharashtra toppled Andhra Pradesh opponent Akshita A. 12-21, 21-12, 21-14 for the girls’ under-13 singles crown but could not make it a double.

Simran’s tandem with another Maharshtra girl Ritika Thaker went down to top seed duo of Akshita A. (Andhra) and Himanshi Rawat (Uttarakhand) 10-21, 7-21.

District football: Udalguri blanked host Karbi Anglong 4-0 to march into the semi-finals of the 6th under-17 girls’ inter-district football tournament at Karbi Anglong Sports Association ground in Diphu today.

Altogether 10 teams are participating in the tournament. Charaideo will take on Mangaldoi in a first round match tomorrow.
