Kokrajhar, Feb. 17: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal today said the party would field candidates in 60 Assembly seats and leave the rest for the Congress. It has also decided to field candidates in at least five Assembly seats in the BTAD.
Talking to reporters at Bhotgaon in Kokrajhar, the AIUDF chief said they were going all out this time and would contest in 60 seats and leave the rest to the Congress, with whom the party is reportedly under a "secret understanding". On the question if there is any secret understanding between the two parties, he said "if I tell the media it does not become secret anymore" and refused to clarify.
The AIUDF, formed in 2005, won 18 seats in the 2011 Assembly polls and emerged as the single largest Opposition party in the Assam Assembly. In the May Lok Sabha polls, the party won three of the 14 seats from the state. The AIUDF contested its maiden Assembly polls in the state in 2006 and won 10 seats. In the BTC polls last year, the party won four seats.
Ajmal was in Kokrajhar to inaugurate the Ajmal Model Village at Bhotgaon, for the people affected in the 2012 BTAD riots.
In his speech, Ajmal slammed the Centre and the state government for doing little for the rehabilitation of the people affected in the BTAD riots.
