Actor loses cancer battle

Guwahati, Aug. 31: Assamese actor Bikram Hazarika, who was suffering from cancer for more than two years, passed away this morning at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Hazarika, 39, who acted in more than five Assamese movies and many television serials, is survived by his wife, Nisha, a daughter, who is a Class II student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara, and a two-year-old son.

His body was taken to House Fed Complex in Jaya Nagar, where he had been staying with his family, and then taken to Nagaon, his hometown. He was cremated at Nagaon.

Born in September 17, 1972, Hazarika was the grandson of freedom fighter Mahendra Hazarika and son of late minister Lakhi Hazarika and actress Prabha.

Hazarika studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara, till Class X. He did his higher secondary from Shillong College and graduated from Nagaon College.

Ujanir Dujani Gabharu directed by Chandra Mudoi, Morom Nodir Gabhoru Ghat and Patni both directed by Pulak Gogoi, Anya Ek Yatra directed by Manju Borah and Barood are some of the films where Hazarika appeared in various roles.

He had acted in many television serials, including Naamghariya, Ei Saharate, Karagaror Diary, Xurujmukhir Xwapna and Pratipad.

While in Nagaon, Hazarika earned a name in theatre. Ghar and Mrinmoy Maya Raktimor Xoite were the plays directed by him.

His friends and well-wishersrushed to his home as soon as the news of his death spread.

“He earned a name as a stage actor while he was in Nagaon. Then he ventured into Assamese films and became a familiar face. We also wanted him as a stage actor but he was too busy with his production house,” said actor Pranjal Saikia.

“He was very hard working. I still remember how beautifully he played his role in a play, Piano Bajise, that we did five years ago.”

Director Pulok Gogoi said his death would leave a void in the Assamese film industry.
