Guwahati, July 26: The panel constituted to select outstation professionals to play for the state in the Ranji Trophy tournament next season has submitted a list of four players to the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) for consideration by the governing body of the apex state cricket body.
The list, including a former Test player and a former ODI player, was prepared after detailed discussion on the terms and conditions they have set. Of the quartet, two would be recruited to strengthen the top-order batting and the position of a batting all-rounder, who could be a handy spinner as well.
Disclosing this, ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said the names suggested include former Test player Sairaj Bahutule, former international S. Sriram, Mumbai batsman Amol Mazumdar and Maharashtra opener Dheeraj Jadhav. The ACA governing body had constituted a panel comprising Prabir Hazarika, Naba Konwar, Subhrajit Saikia, M.N. Saikia and Babul Hore to shortlist the outstation players.
“The governing body will finalise on the recommendation on the basis of the requirement of the team. The selectors’ views too will be taken into account for the final recruitment of the players,” Baruah said. The date for the next governing body meeting is yet to be finalised.
Although former international Hemang Badani too was contacted and he was also interested, the initiative had to be aborted following the uncertainty over his availability as his home state Tamil Nadu too had expressed its willingness to field him in their team. Further, former international Akash Chopra and Delhi player Mithun Manhas were also contacted but were stated to be unavailable.
The ACA had also tried to recruit a foreign player, which was eventually aborted after the BCCI adopted a recommendation to do away with the recruitment of foreign professionals for the domestic circuit.
According to sources, Sriram and Jadhav were almost certainties for the state team.
“Sriram fits into and an all-rounder’s spot while Jadhav is a reliable top-order batsman,” a member of the selection panel said. The BCCI allows upto three professionals as guest players in a team.
Assam will open their plate Group A campaign against Rajasthan here from November 3 to 6 and then fly to Goa to play the hosts from November 10 to 13.
The team will fly back for three home matches against Jharkhand from November 17 to 20, Tripura from December 1 to 4 and Vidarbha from December 8 to 11.
