Guwahati: Assam Horticultural Society, an NGO engaged in the field of agriculture and horticulture in the state, will organise the 23rd Annual Assam Agri-Horticultural Show 2018 with 60 stalls at the Ganesh Mandir Sports Complex, Khanapara, from Friday to Sunday.

A number of nurseries from places such as Nagaon and Lakhimpur will display their exhibits for sale.

A training programme and seminar on agriculture and horticulture for farmers will be held where scientists of Assam Agricultural University and senior officials of agriculture and horticulture departments will participate as resource persons.

The founder member of the NGO and former joint director of the agriculture department Mrinal Barman said: "Our society was set up in 1994. From 1995 we have been organising agri-horti shows in the state. We provide knowledge on latest breakthroughs in the field of agriculture and horticulture and implement government schemes for welfare of farmers."

"The state government supported us in organising these shows in Assam besides at national and international levels. In December, we organised an international agri-horticulture show in Dibrugarh on the request of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal."

Fruits, vegetables, spices, medicinal and aromatic plants, mushrooms, flowers and processed food - all come within the ambit of "horticulture".

Barman said: "The state-level shows provide a better scope for interaction with farmers. We give information on latest government schemes to them and urge central government organisations for proper implementations of those schemes. Horticulture is a suitable job option for educated youths. We are urging farmers to go organic as it is the latest trend. We have over 4,000 life members across the state."
