Floods, triggered by incessant rain over the past few days, have affected 4.23 lakh people in 17 districts of Assam.

According to the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra, Dikhow, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Puthimari and Beki are flowing above the danger level at different places.

The Assam State Disaster Management authorities said no loss of human life was reported on Thursday. On Wednesday, three persons died in the floods.

As floodwaters continued to submerge new areas, the affected people are taking shelter on higher ground with their belongings and livestock. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have evacuated 721 people. Altogether 1,843 people are staying in 53 relief camps.

The regional meteorological centre here has predicted rain/thundershowers at most places and warned of extremely heavy rain in some places.

Owing to incessant rain and waters gushing down from neighbouring Garo hills in Meghalaya, the flood situation in Goalpara district, especially the Matia revenue circle, has deteriorated. At least nine villages in East Goalpara remained inundated for the second consecutive day on Thursday. The SDRF rescued nearly 50 people on Wednesday night.

Excess water in Kopili hydroelectric project at Umrangsu in Dima Hasao district of Assam resulted in water being released from three gates.

Heavy rain left the Haflong-Silchar road partially blocked and only heavy vehicles can cross it. However, train services in the hill district are normal.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday reviewed the flood situation through video conferencing with deputy commissioners and district-level senior officials and asked them to remain fully alert and prepared to tackle floods.

“Sonowal asked the DCs to activate 24x7 control rooms. He enquired about the status of relief camps, distribution of relief materials and measures adopted for safety of animals,” a source said.

He directed the police to hold regular patrols in the flood-affected areas to ensure safety and security of property of the flood-hit people. He asked the DCs to contact with the director of health services if there is any shortage of doctors and instructed them to take steps for adequate care for animals affected by floods.

“Sonowal asked the power department to take necessary measures to prevent electrocution. He directed the DCs to release the one-time financial assistance to the next of kin of the deceased,” said the source.

Sonowal asked deputy commissioner of Kamrup (metro) and ASDMA to identify landslide-prone areas here and sensitise local people to vacate such places.

Goalpara flooded: The incessant rain and waters gushing down from Meghalaya have worsened the flood situation in Goalpara district, specially of the Matia revenue circle, deteriorated. At least nine villages were submerged in Goalpara. Manikpur and Krishnai Nepalikhuti in east Goalpara remained inundated for the second consecutive day on Thursday. About 50 people were rescued with the help of the SDRF on Wednesday night. Mujkuri and Dohapara villages near Matia faced similar situation as an under-construction culvert of Matia Nandeswar Road of state highway 46 caused additional waterlogging in the villages.

Doomdooma rain: Incessant rain continued for the third consecutive day in Tinsukia district on Thursday. Circle officer, Doomdooma, Pankaj Nagbonshi, said: “Thirty-nine villages under Doomdooma circle are inundated by floods and three relief camps have been set up.”
