Agnik Kolkata, a label for both men and women, is taking the city’s fashion game a notch higher with its hand-embroidered and hand-painted creations. Their designs feature classic Bengali festive motifs like scarlet hibiscus blooms, along with Pala- and Gupta-age sculptures, goddesses, Frida Kahlo, and traditional art such as patachitra. Their quirkiest creations however, are probably the tie-up kurtas or oversized biker jackets with Uttam-Suchitra or Ray’s Devi styled with fanny packs and bandook bags. Apart from apparel, their collections also feature accessories such as the bags, and a range of well-crafted statement jewellery such as brass earcuffs inspired by the Ma Kali’s khara, and exquisite necklaces crafted in wood and glass, and heritage terracotta. There’s a distinct Bengali and Kolkata touch in their work but it's universal in its eclectic and quirky appeal. In owner and fashion designer Agnik Ghosh's words, “We try to modulate a theme or concept by adding a little bangaliyana to it.”
