Kolkata’s CSTC celebrates 75 historic years with decorated fleet
The organised road transport in public sector was formed in 1948

While the first bus service began in Calcutta in 1922, government buses made their entry only after Independence on July 31, 1948. Launched by then chief minister Bidhan Chandra Roy, the State Transport Services provided services to passengers in and around Kolkata. It was renamed Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC) in 1960, and in 2014, the state government announced CSTC as the primary bus service provider in Kolkata.
Currently operating under the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) along with the Calcutta Tramways, CSTC celebrated 75 years. Marking the occasion, CSTC employees organised several programmes at the head office in Belgharia. Minister of State for Transport, Dilip Mondal along with WBTC’s managing director of Services, Rajanvir Singh Kapur and transport minister Snehashis Chakraborty, were present at the event. Chairman of the corporation, Madan Mitra, flagged off 11 decorated buses (as seen in a reel posted by @kolbusopedia) from 11 depots on July 31. Around 35 workers were honoured for their contribution and 31 retired staff received a farewell. A blood donation camp was held and the corporation announced the initiative to set up libraries in the bus depots for the children of employees.
