Desire for Fire is an anthology of modern Bengali poetry that has been curated and translated by Arunava Sinha. Featuring poems by some of the stalwarts of Bengali literature — Rabindranath Tagore, Jibanananda Das, Shakti Chattopadhyay amongst others — the publication is the result of a collaborative project from 2018, between writers of Wales and West Bengal. The crisp translator’s note at the beginning of the book is followed by an introductory timeline of Bengali poetry by Ayan Chatterjee which helps contextualise the poems in the book and places them against a specific literary and historical background.
Published by BEE Books, this anthology holds appeal for all kinds of readers; while it is a great introduction for those unfamiliar with Bengali language or Bengali poetry, seasoned readers can soak up the experience of revisiting old classics infused with the fresh perspective of a different language.
