With Jonathan Franzen’s much awaited family trilogy recently taking off (read about it here), here’s a look at another eagerly anticipated trilogy that came to an end earlier this year.
Any Way the Wind Blows, which was released on July 15, 2021, marked the end of the Simon Snow series which began in 2019 with the publication of Carry On. Set in the senior year at Watford School of Magicks, the eponymous protagonist of the trilogy finds himself plagued by evil forces, even though all he wants is some peace and quiet. Simon and his classmates have to balance out the trials of homework and romance while also warding off monsters and other paranormal forces which seek to disrupt their lives.
While Simon does save the day in Carry On, his adventures are far from being over, as he goes on to confront dangerous creatures in the second book of the series, Wayward Son. All the loose ends that had been scattered throughout the first two books are slowly tied back together in the finale of this trilogy, which can easily be hailed as the most turbulent (and therefore, most enjoyable) of the lot.
Fantasy and reality tend to come together beautifully in Rainbow Rowell’s young adult fiction – Fangirl and Eleanor & Park are some others. With a recommended reading age-group of 12 to 16, the next time you catch yourself wondering what to get a teen for their birthday, reach for a Rainbow.
