Considered one of the greatest Bengali novels, Khwabnama by Bangladeshi novelist, Akhtaruzzaman Elias, chronicles the tribulations of Bengal’s farmers over the years, until the time of Partition. The nuances of the narrative take us through the dreams of a young farmhand who becomes a sharecropper, even as it explores the history of his land and his people. The ideas are lofty, while the evocative imagery is as violent as it is beautiful. “It’s definitely the longest I’ve taken to translate a book,” admits Arunava Sinha. Ironically, Elias’ greatest novel only rose to popularity after his death. The translation has been published by Penguin India.
