Swadesh Deepak is an Indian novelist, playwright and short story writer, best known for his pioneering work Court Martial, which was published in 1991. Published by Speaking Tiger, I Have Not Seen Mandu is a translation of his latest work — Maine Mandu Nahin Dekha — which is a memoir.
After having attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire, the author battles repeated hallucinations but finds himself imprisoned in his mind. This “fractured soul memoir” chronicles Swadesh Deepak’s long battle with his mental illness, recording a period of brief respite in between where he seemed to be making a recovery before completely sinking into madness.
The book has been translated into English by Jerry Pinto, who is renowned for his books, Em and The Big Hoom, Murder in Mahim and Asylum, to name a few.
