‘Billy Summers’ by Stephen King

A hired assassin is tasked with completing “one last job”

Published 09.09.21, 12:10 AM

A fresh take on the serial-killer-looking-to-quit genre, Billy Summers gives us an anti-hero we can get behind, having a set of strong principles whilst carrying significant baggage from his past. The master of ‘horror fiction’ creates a vivid world where Billy’s last hit requires him to befriend his neighbours and lurk in the shadows for a long time, biding his time before the target presents itself. As part of the job, the hitman poses as an author, and begins writing his own story, making for a compelling understudy of a killer's upbringing, trauma and motives. The masterfully written ending compelled us to shut the book and sit in quiet contemplation before getting on with our day, wondering who among our neighbours might be a contract killer in disguise!
