Several pockets of the city remained waterlogged for hours on Wednesday and trees fell in at least four places following overnight rain.
Officers in Calcutta police’s traffic department said several roads had ankle-deep water along the kerbs for much of Wednesday morning.
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC)’s drainage pumping station in Kamdahari, near Garia, recorded 137mm rain from 2 am till 9 am on Wednesday.
The Ballygunge drainage pumping station of the CMC recorded 92mm during the same period.
Parts of Patuli were waterlogged through the day. There was nearly knee-deep water in J and K blocks of Patuli in the morning. Two pumps were deployed in the area to drain out the water faster.
Bappaditya Dasgupta, councillor of Ward 101 (which includes Patuli), said the two waterlogged blocks were at a lower height than the adjacent roads. “Waterlogging is a chronic problem in the area. We are using pumps to drain out water,” he said.
Stretches of the road under the Baghajatin railway bridge were also under water.
There was ankle-deep water on stretches of the Prince Anwar Shah Road connector and Karl Marx Sarani, in the port area, on Wednesday morning.
Police officers and CMC engineers said most arterial roads were not flooded.
A tree fell on Rashbehari Avenue, near Deshapriya Park, around 10am, blocking the entire Gariahat-bound flank of the road and a portion of the Rashbehari-bound flank. Traffic during the morning rush hour was affected.
Trees also fell on Waterloo Street, on Bipin Pal Road in Kalighat and in Topsia, said an official of the CMC.
“The volume of rain was significant but it was spread over several hours, which also helped avert any major waterlogging,” said a CMC official.
Pockets of VIP Road and Chinar Park were waterlogged on Wednesday morning, triggering snarls on the artery that connects the airport with the rest of the city.
On VIP Road, a 150m-long stretch on the airport-bound flank near the Haldiram’s bus stop had ankle- to knee-deep water till around 10 am. The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation deployed portable pumps and the water was drained out by 11 am.
Airport-bound traffic slowed down on the stretch till the water was fully drained out.
Residents of housing complexes along the stretch said they had been facing this problem for long. Rickshaw-pullers charged a premium in the morning.
The situation was similar in Chinar Park, too. Traffic crawled on the airport-bound as well as the Salt Lake-bound flank of Major Arterial Road (MAR) as there were pockets that were knee-deep under water.
“We deployed workers and suction machines but gully pits and channels were completely choked by cement, sand and stone chips on VIP Road,” said a PWD official. An official of New Town Kolkata Development Authority said the same about MAR.
