In a number of schools, latecomers were not penalised and the gates were kept open even beyond the scheduled time.

Low turnouts were reported by, among others, La Martiniere for Boys, Loreto House, Loreto Day School Elliot Road, Indus Valley World School, Mahadevi Birla World Academy and South City International School.

Not just students, at some schools teachers reached late, too, because of the weather. A number of students and teachers got wet while trying to reach school.

Police had a hard time managing the traffic in the rain.

Children getting down in front of the school gates were taking longer than usual to enter the premises with their umbrellas and rain gear.

“Attendance was poor across classes. Only about 50 per cent of the students in each class came and, in some classes, it was even less,” said Amita Prasad, director, Indus Valley World School.

“Some of our teachers could not come because the approach roads to theirhomes were waterlogged,” she said.

The school had to close one of the two gates because of water in front of it.

“Only one gate was kept open. We managed wellwith one gate because attendance was so thin,” Prasadsaid.

At Mahadevi Birla World Academy, attendance in senior classes was as low as 40 to 50 per cent. In the junior section of South City International School, only 50 per cent of the students in each class turned up.

At Loreto Day School Elliot Road, around 30 per cent of the students did not turn up.

“After three days of being late to school, studentsare issued a warning. But those rules were relaxed today,” said John Stephen, acting principal, La Martiniere for Boys.

At Don Bosco Park Circus, too, the rules were relaxed on Thursday.

“Warnings are issuedif children are late. If they do so regularly, parentsare called. But today, given the weather, we had to beunderstanding,” saidFather Bikash Mondal, principal, Don Bosco ParkCircus.
