In a bid to kickstart the nightlife of New Town, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority is offering space to food trucks to be parked at two designated spots in the evening late into the night from June 3.

One of these is the space under the flyover connecting the Axis Mall side to the Central mall side which has been designed as a pedestrian plaza leading to the City Square around the clock tower. The space allotted to the food trucks will be open to air and located right next to the Square.

The other spot is in front of Mothers Wax Museum, opposite Gate 2 of Eco Park, next to the stationary tram of the Hidco-run snacketeria Kolkata Street Food. Five parking lots will be reserved there for the food trucks, official sources said.

“Young people want to hang out. So we are developing these two stretches to stay alive till midnight. The trucks will be given trade licence on condition that they have FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) licence. We are starting with five food trucks at each of the two spots. They can stay there for 90 days by which time we expect more applications to come in,” said NKDA chairman Debashis Sen.

The food trucks will be operational from 6.30pm till midnight.

To make people aware of the initiative, a festival has been planned over the weekend from June 3 during which the hangout area will also be inaugurated. Futsal matches will be held featuring local players. The mobile book library that is currently parked at Eco Park will also come here during the the festival.

Events like performances of bands will keep happening there intermittently afterwards.

Some food kiosks are also supposed to come up under the bridge on what is being called the Street for People.
