An overcast sky and multiple spells of rain marked Sunday in Kolkata as a depression on the Bay of Bengal entered land through Odisha.

Between 8.30pm on Saturday and 8.30pm on Sunday, the Met office in Alipore recorded around 25mm of rain. The forecast was for heavy rain, which translates to 60mm in 24 hours.

The heavy rain alert stands for Monday.

“The monsoon trough is still over Odisha, to the south of coastal West Bengal. But on Monday, the trough is likely to rise and come close to the coastal belt of south Bengal, said G.K. Das, director of IMD, Kolkata.

On Monday and Tuesday, heavy rain is likely in Kolkata, North and South 24-Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, Jhargram and Bankura.

South Bengal is likely to be under the grip of a wet spell till September 14, said the Met forecast.

The depression over the Bay entered land early on Sunday and “lay centered at 8.30am over south Odisha about 110km west-northwest of Gopalpur (Odisha),” said a Met bulletin.

“It is likely to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh during the next 24 hours and weaken gradually.”

On Sunday, the sun came out for a brief period, to be soon cloaked by clouds. The intensity of the showers picked up in the afternoon. But it was short-lived and soon weakened into a drizzle.

A spell of heavy rain is needed to narrow the rainfall deficit this year, said Met officials.
