Fire guts wood godown at Nimtala Ghat Street

Eighteen fire tenders rushed to the spot to contain the blaze in the congested area

A fire broke out at a wood godown in the heavily congested Nimtala Ghat Street in north Kolkata early on Friday morning.
The blaze started around 7.45am from the asbestos tent on a wooden structure on the first floor of the godown.

There are around 300 wood godowns in the vicinity, according to sources.

According to reports, 18 fire engines were rushed to the spot to contain the fire, the cuase of whih could not be ascertained till reports last came in.

The sound of a cylinder explosion could also be heard, local residents claimed. The fire spread to multiple places, which the fire fighters tried to control.

The incident spread panic in the congested area, which houses several godowns, shops and residential buildings. Attempts were being made to extinguish the fire with water from nearby houses.

Despite sustained efforts, the fire could not brought under control till last reports came in early on Friday morning. Local MLA Shashi Panja visited the spot.

Fire services minister Sujit Bose too reached the spot.

The damages suffered to property could not be ascertained. No lives were lost. It was possible to bring everyone out shortly after the fire broke out.
