Clouds gathered over Kolkata on Tuesday evening but there was no rain.
The Met office stuck to its forecast of thunderstorms in the next few days.
A cyclonic circulation formed over Jharkhand on Tuesday, raising the hopes of an end to a prolonged hot and dry spell in south Bengal.
“The cyclonic circulation has started drawing moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. The conditions are becoming favourable for the formation of rain-bearing thunderclouds over Jharkhand and adjoining districts of Bengal. The clouds are expected to move eastwards and gain more strength as they come closer to the coast,” said a Met official.
The clouds over Kolkata on Tuesday evening came mainly from Odisha and Purba and Paschim Medinipur, said Met officials. They were not strong enough to trigger rain.
The day’s maximum temperature was 34.3 degrees, a notch below average. But the minimum relative humidity shot up to 63 per cent.
