Dhanteras is here and so is the rush to buy jewellery of all kinds. Women have since time immemorial dressed up with jewellery made of various materials. The designs and patterns, too, have changed with time and many designs of yore have also returned.

My Kolkata draws up a list of different kinds of jewellery, one each for a letter of the Bengali alphabet.

Aw( অ)- Ananta:

An armlet, worn on the upper portion of the arm

AA(আ)- Antabicha:

A kind of necklace popular in the Mayurbhanj area of Odisha. It resembles a chandra haar

E (ই)- Induchondo:

A piece of jewellery with one hundred and eight rows, usually made for the gods

U (উ)- Urohsutrika:

A long necklace made of pearls

Uu(ঊ)-Urmika:

A kind of ring. Since the word urmi means wave, the ring could have the signs of that

A (এ)- Ekaboli:

A necklace designed with rows but no pearls

0w(ও)- Owddianam:

A kind of necklace (chandra haar) popular in Uttar Pradesh

Kho(খ)-Khonpar phool:

A jewellery worn to adorn the buns. The size may vary from big to small

G(গ)- Got:

An ornamental metal girdle worn by women. A kind of necklace is also made known as gothaar. It is stringed in the same way as the got and hence the name
