Q: I am 26 years old and have completed a diploma in electronics and communication engineering. I have been working for the last 18 months in a private firm. At present, I am on the verge of completing my BTech and want to pursue an MTech later. Is that a good option in the long run? Also, I want to know if I will be able to do a full-time job in the second year of my MTech since there are no classes then.

Somnath Roy

A:Since you have mentioned your age as 26 and that you are about to complete your BTech and want to pursue an MTech, I am slightly sceptical. Wouldn’t it be slightly late for you to enter the job market after you complete all these qualifications? Although you have 18 months’ experience, I would say that this long period of study might have an adverse effect on your job prospects. It would be better if you could rethink your plans and decide how much an MTech would benefit you vis-à-vis if you try getting a job after your BTech.

Q: I have done my graduation in botany (hons). Now I am doing an MBA (marketing). What kind of jobs can I get in the future? I want to enter the IT industry. What should I do?

Debanjan Das

A:You are specialising in marketing and hence it is obvious that you would choose a job which would give you an opportunity to hone your skills in that area. Even if you join the IT industry, you will be responsible for pushing products or services, as per the organisational portfolio.

In that case, your graduation will not be of any help. But if you want to utilise both your graduation and MBA, then you should be looking for a job in the life sciences industry, which is an upcoming industry today, with lots of opportunities.

Q:I am a 25-year-old pure sciences graduate. Currently, I am working for a leading pharmaceutical MNC as a sales executive and have work experience of three years. I am pursuing a postgraduate diploma in human rights from the Indian Institute of Human Rights, New Delhi. What opportunity can I expect after this course? I am also planning to do an MBA in international marketing from Symbiosis, Pune (distance learning). Will that help?

Sujit Kumar

A:These are diverse disciplines that you are following at present. Your education in pure science with a job in the pharma industry is congruent, but doing a diploma in human rights would mean that you are looking for an opportunity to work with an NGO.

Further, you want to pursue an MBA in international marketing, which does not go with the human rights qualification. If you intend to do a course in international marketing, then you should be looking at jobs in the corporate sector specifically.

Whichever field you choose from your current and future vocations, only one will be useful in a specific industry. So you need to carefully analyse if you want to pursue international marketing at all.

Q:I am a 25-year-old commerce graduate. I have worked for a year in ICICI as a sales executive. I want to pursue retail management from a reputed college. Will my age work against me in doing a full-time course? Should I try and get a job in the retail sector at this stage?

Sabyasachi Datta

A:Retail is an upcoming sector. There are a host of colleges which are offering courses specific to retail in collaboration with particular organisations or on a stand-alone basis. You can do a quick search on the Internet and see which college would be suitable. Since this sector is short on talent, I would imagine that you wouldn’t have too much difficulty in getting a job after completing your course.

Q: I have recently got a job in Assurgent Technology Solutions Pvt. Ltd (a software company dealing in photogrammetry, cryptography). Should I take this job? If I join now, can I switch to better companies later on?

Name withheld

A:Since you have already got a job, it will be prudent to join. You can change jobs in case you don’t find suitable exposure in your current job. The fields which you mentioned are part of the latest technology and it would be good for you to join and check out the prospects here.
