Jamshedpur, March 23: The district police today rounded up 30 suspected anti-socials while they were following the police van carrying Akhilesh Singh ? recently convicted for the murder of a jailer.
The police have also seized five four-wheelers and over two dozen cell phones from them.
The anti-socials, all associates of Singh, were following the police van on its way Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. Singh had been brought here for production in the court of additional district and session judge R. Dayal in connection with a case of firing on police officials. Police said one of the suspects even tried to influence them in the name of close proximity to a state cabinet minister.
East Singhbhum superintendent of police Ashish Batra said they had got a tip-off that some suspected anti-socials were following the escort van on its way to Ranchi. All the police stations were alerted immediately and police managed to round them up near Azad Nagar checkpost, said Batra. ?We have detained all the 30 youths, who were travelling in five four-wheelers and seized over two dozen mobile phones. The four-wheelers, that did not have valid papers, have also been confiscated,? he said.
The SP said he has asked his officers to verify the antecedents of the youths.?We suspect that some of the sim cards seized from them have been purchased by furnishing fake papers. And if it is found true, the youths will also be booked on charges of forgery,? he said, adding that those found innocent will be set free after verification.
Girl arrested
Twenty-eight-year-old Saheen Parvin, who was, last morning, picked by the police for interrogation in connection with the murder of a youth, was ultimately arrested today.
A mother of two, Saheen, said to be a distant relative of the victim, was forwarded to judicial custody after being booked under charges of conspiracy and murder, this evening. On March 17 night, Samser alias Mohammed Yunus was fatally burnt after three motorcycle-borne assailants set him on fire after sprinkling petrol on him.
The incident occurred when the victim was walking down a lonely street near Agrashan Bhavan in Sakchi along with Saheen. Samser succumbed on March 21.
