Jamshedpur, Jan. 1: Keeping in mind the growing threat of AIDS, Care?s Jharkhand chapter is training students to tackle questions from peers on these issues.

Due to the initiates of Care?s Jharkhand Chapter and Parivar Kalyan Sangh, a non-government organisation (NGO) under the aegis of Tata Motors, students from about a dozen-odd schools in Jamshedpur will receive a comprehensive peer-educator training in the coming week.

For this programme, chosen teachers from Jusco schools were trained during the last few days, who, in turn, will be educating the students on the issues related to sexual health and hygiene.

The youth coordinator of Care, Shilpa Sinha, explained that the event is being organised under an awareness programme for urban youths.

?This programme is part of our urban programme for youths ? Chayan, which was launched in about 45 districts across five states and in the steel city. In the steel city 15 schools under the Jamshedpur Utilities Services and Company (Jusco) were chosen a few months ago. Our aim is to reach out to the youth and bring about more awareness,? she added.

About 44 senior students from seven schools all over the city have been selected to be part of this unique training programme, which will be held at the DM Madan Girls? High School, Bistupur, from January 7 to 10.

The programme has been divided into two parts viz, life skill education and prevention of AIDS.

Divided into 12 sessions, the training programme would be held for two days in two groups.

?Under life skill education programme, the emphasis would be given on developing responsible sexual behaviour through life skill education like self-awareness and decision making.

?While the other half would deal with answering queries like peer pressure and changes a person undergoes in adolescence,? added Shilpa.

Come tomorrow, teachers of the chosen schools will sit for a mock session with representatives from Care India.

Moving ahead with their plans to set up a youth centre for students, the authorities at Care said the youth centres will come up by mid-January in most schools and will soon be followed in colleges.
