Jamshedpur, Nov. 25: After a whopping response last year, this year’s campus recruitment process started on a low key with software giant Wipro picking up only five students at the campus placements organised at Jamshedpur Workers College, this morning.
This comes as a clear contrast to last years results when each company picked up a huge number of students from city colleges for jobs at call centres and BPOs in Pune, Bangalore, Calcutta and Gurgaon.
Unlike previous year this year only 42 students appeared for the aptitude test. The Jamshedpur Workers College invited students of other colleges as well to sit for placement test in their campus..
“The results have been a bit disappointing, but at least such companies are coming to recruit students from such a small college like ours, ” said S.S. Razi, principal of Jamshedpur Workers College. In my opinion, matters would definitely improve in the years to come with students performing better at the aptitude tests. Out of the five odd selected students three are from Jamshedpur Workers College, one recruited from Jamshedpur Womens’ College and another from Karim City College.
The placements, which began early in the morning, was a slow starter, with only a few students appearing for the campus recruitment test.
The campus recruitment test was divided into three categories, with the students first appearing for the written test first, which was followed by a group discussion and personal interview.
The ones selected would now move to Calcutta to join the Wipro BPO there.
“This is only our second year in Jamshedpur. In the coming days we plan to conduct similar placement test and interviews in other city colleges as well,” said a Wipro official. Some of the other colleges that the company will visit this week are Jamshedpur Womens’ College and the Graduate School College for Women.
Though very disappointed, but authorities at Jamshedpur Workers College are taking the results into their stride. “We have to work harder the next time so that more and more of our students are placed,” said Razi, the principal of Jamshedpur Workers College.
Some of the other companies which would visit the college in the coming days are Usha Martin on December 7 and Infosys BPO on December 12. “Talks are on with several other leading companies to arrange for placement of their students,” added Razi.
