The Met office has forecast light to moderate rain in Jharkhand on October 19, anticipating that a low-pressure area will turn into a depression.

"The trough is likely to develop over east-central Bay of Bengal around October 15, intensify into a depression in the next 48 hours and move northwest. This will result in light to moderate rainfall in several places, especially in southern and central Jharkhand," said Upendra Srivastava of Ranchi Meteorological Centre.

Friday's satellite pictures indicated that a system is in the making over the Bay. "The extent of rainfall will depend on its movement. Things will be clear after 48 hours," said a weather analyst at the IMD office in Patna, adding that such systems was common during this time of the year.

Weathermen said the next couple of days would be humid and rise in day temperatures might escalate the discomfort index.

Met officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, Calcutta, said the low pressure would further delay monsoon's exit from Jharkhand. "The normal withdrawal date for southwest monsoon is October 8. The low pressure will further delay its retreat," said a duty officer.

The IMD office in Ranchi concurred that the state was yet to see withdrawal. "There are certain parameters to determine exit such as no rain for three consecutive days and south-westerly winds being replaced by a northwesterly flow," a Met official said.
