Ranchi, Sept. 14: In an attempt to train the students to face the challenges of employment and career in future, Ranchi University has set the ball rolling for setting up an “education, career counselling-cum-placement cell.”

University sources said the cell would provide “training and orientation” to students “ on current awareness and on different topics related to personality development”. It would function under the dean of students’ welfare.

Sources said the principals of all the colleges under Ranchi University have been asked to expedite the process of forming cells in their respective colleges. Colleges have been asked to submit a concrete proposal in this regard on an estimated budget, sources added.

According to the letter written to the principals, “Each college will constitute an education, career counselling-cum- placement cell, which will be monitored by two teachers, to be called cell co-ordinators.

The college principal will be the patron of that cell, whose aim has been set to “motivate the students to prepare themselves to face the challenge of the day.” The cell will organise placement and career counselling workshops from time-to-time, sources said.

Besides, the DSW section has also drafted the functioning of the cell. According to an instruction issued to the college principals through the letter, the cell would organise three-day workshops on different themes for each part of the undergraduate classes.

According to sources, the cell will organise sessions on essay writing, debate, extempore and comprehension at different workshops for students of part I degree course.

“Sessions on exemplification, precis-writing, group discussion and reasoning will be held at the workshops to be conducted for the students of part II degree course,” sources said.

Each workshop will be followed by an inter-class competition, following which selected candidates will be sent to participate in inter college/university tournaments.

“Besides, the cell will also manage two periods every week in BA/BSc/BCom part III classes for lectures on main historical events (15 lectures), geographical concepts (five lectures), social and political concepts — constitution of India, parliamentary affairs (10 lectures), general knowledge, general science, important discoveries and important laws (15 lectures),” sources said.
