Jamshedpur, Nov. 28: Amarnath Singh, an undertrial who was taken on a two-day police remand on Monday, has complained of torture.

Amarnath and two undertrials were taken on remand from Sakchi jail. He was taken on remand in connection with a probe into a firing incident at Mango in September. The other two — Mrutyunjay Singh and Lalit Sharma — are also accused in the firing.

While the two other undertrials were sent to jail after the remand, the prison authorities refused to take Amarnath in as he complained of serious pain and other discomforts.

An accused in the Sunil Sharma murder case, Amarnath had allegedly fallen ill reportedly because the police thrashed him when he was on remand.

Amarnath has been taken to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital for treatment after he complained of pain.

The undertrial said he was not able to stand straight after the police tortured him during interrogation. He said the police officers involved in the beating were posted at Mango police station.

“The police continued to thrash me in lock up though I repeatedly told them that I was in no way involved in the firing. The police wanted to establish otherwise,” the accused said while talking to journalists at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital.

However, inspector of Mango police station Umesh Prasad Singh said the allegation made by the accused was baseless. “We had brought the three accused on police remand by following norms and returned them properly — all within the stipulated time. But if any one of them complains of internal pain or something like that, what can we do?” asked the inspector.

The inspector said soon after the undertrial complained of pain, they brought him to the medical college hospital for treatment.

“We sent the under- trial back to the jail after taking an X-ray,” said the police officer, adding that the police were not involved in any unusual activities.

Amarnath, Mrutyunjay and Lalit have been accused of firing on a person at Mango in September. The three had recently surrendered before a court. They were implicated in a case in a sequel to incessant firing at the house and office of a prominent builder, Pradeep Churibala, in Mango.
