Jamshedpur, Feb. 17: The Tata Steel management has floated two proposals to the Tata Workers’ Union (TWU) for the “painless” transfer of a section of employees to its newly-floated Jamshedpur Utility and Services Company (Jusco).
The union has been opposing the shifting of workers on Tata Steel payroll to Jusco. A management delegation led by chief of human resources & industrial relation B.N. Sarangi and the top functionaries of the union, led by president R.B.B. Singh, held a marathon meeting this morning for about four hours.
Tata Steel, in a recent move, created Jusco and entrusted it to look after the non-core business activities of the steel major like providing municipal services in the city. The steel major wants to concentrate on its core business area — manufacturing and marketing steel and allied products.
According to TWU insiders, the first proposal of the management was regarding those employees, who were unwilling to be transferred to Jusco. “The management has suggested that those employees who are not eager to work for the new company can opt for the Early Separation Scheme (ESS),” a senior union official said.
The second option given by the management was that unwilling workers could resign from the company and one of their wards would be given a job in Jusco. The new recruits would also be provided houses soon after appointment.
“The management has made it clear that in case the employees are transferred to the new organisation, his salary will be protected. There will be no loss in salary,” TWU officials said.
However, the union suggested to the management that instead of providing bulk amount to the workers, who opt for ESS, the latter should provide monthly pension to the employee till he turns 60 and a job to his son in Jusco.
“Moreover, we stressed that temporary employees should be given preference in the new company rather than shift a section of Tisco workers to Jusco. But the management has ruled out any such possibility,” TWU sources said.
The stalemate between the management and the union on the issue was yet to be resolved. TWU sources said there could be few rounds of discussions between the management and the union as the deadlock over the transfer of employees was yet to be resolved.
