Jamshedpur, May 25: Eminent scientists from the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) will soon organise workshops for teachers of state-run schools as part of a East Singhbhum district education department initiative to improve the performance of students in board exams.
District education officer Ashok Kumar Sharma wrote to NML authorities earlier this month, requesting them to conduct an interactive session for teachers of government schools.
While NML has already agreed to the proposal, it is yet to hold a meeting with district education officials to chalk out the nitty-gritty of the workshop.
“This will be our first workshop with teachers, especially those working in state schools. The session will primarily stress on encouraging teachers to teach science in a more interactive and playful manner so that students do not get nervous while learning their basics in science,” said N.G. Goswami, chief scientist and head (information management and dissemination centre) at NML.
The education department, as part of its efforts, is also short-listing reputable teachers under whom students are known to perform well. After selecting the mentors, separate teams for each subject will be formed. These teams, each comprising seven to eight teachers, will prepare a set of model questions that will be distributed in schools from July.
Schools will hold tests on weekly and monthly basis and a register will be maintained at every cradle to monitor the improvement of each student.
“We will organise quiz in social sciences, literature and language. We experimented with maths last year and this year, many students appearing for matric have scored full marks in maths. This was rare earlier,” said Sharma.
He added that the education department was targeting 85 per cent results next year as compared to 73.364 per cent in the last academic session.
