If Piku brought a smile to your face, it is also fetching business for theatre owners across the state.
It's an offbeat father-daughter film but even after 12 days - Piku released on May 8 - Jamshedpureans are still flocking to their nearest cinema halls to catch the hypochondriac Bhaskor Banerji (Amitabh Bachchan) and his 30-something daughter Piku (Deepika Padukone) wage a battle against his constipation.
On Wednesday, when ticket prices in the steel city were almost half, theatres were running houseful only for this slice-of-life film filled with the dad-daughter duo's antics.
"It is very difficult to say which movie performs well in Jharkhand. The last one that did good business was Aamir Khan-starrer PK that released last December. Gabbar too had done well. The rest of the movies were average. But, Piku is ruling hearts here. A simple film based on the relationship between a father and daughter has struck the right chord," said Anand Lohia, director of Eylex Fun 'n' Films where five shows are being screened.
Payal Cinema, a singleplex in Mango, is also running two shows.
"There is more than 80 per cent occupancy in weekdays (except Wednesdays) and weekends. On Wednesdays, it's houseful. Piku is not a conventional crowd-puller, it neither has items songs nor fight sequences. It is also not a love story. It is a comedy on a common subject that nobody wants to speak about. The class act by all actors is attracting people in droves," said Vishal Sawa of Payal Cinema.
Both Payal Cinema and Eylex have decided to run the film for another week at least.
In Ranchi, three shows of Piku are running in Eylex and one in Glitz.
In Deoghar, there are four shows of Piku in Eylex.
In Dhanbad, Inox Cinemas has four shows this week. A representative of Inox Cinemas said that the response was better than other movies and there was about 80 per cent occupancy for all the shows.
Till date, the film has grossed over Rs 80 crore in India. Internationally, Piku has turned out to be the biggest hit of 2015 having earned a mighty 4.3 million USD till May 17.
The combined worldwide gross collections of Piku stand at Rs 107.34 crore.
Movie buffs are appreciating Piku for its simplicity and comic timing.
"Bhaskor Banerji is a character found in almost every Bengali household. Director Shoojit Sircar has dealt brilliantly with a subject like constipation. Irrfan is a gem in the film. It's is a film that one can enjoy the most with one's family," said Satyabrata Sen, an executive with Tata Motors who came to watch the film on his day off, Wednesday.
Homemaker Mohini Ranganathan who came to watch Piku at the Jamshedpur Eylex, agreed. "We've heard a lot about it from colleagues, friends and relatives. Perhaps Bengalis will understand and enjoy the film more than others," she said.
