Ranchi, July 9: A 14-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after jumping off the third floor of her residential school here today. She has been admitted to Gurunanak Hospital.
Though the reason behind such an extreme step is yet to be ascertained, sources hint at a love affair.
Hospital director N.N. Aggarwal said the left part of her body was severely affected and 12 doctors were engaged in saving her life at the intensive care unit.
The girl’s parents — father Mohammed Saleem, a businessman, and mother Saleha Khatoon, a beauty professional — who reside in Calcutta, have rushed to the capital.
Although unconfirmed sources cited teenage love as the reason, in the absence of a concrete clue, the principal of Oxford Public School where the girl studies in Class VIII, S.B.P. Mehta, said that an inquiry committee had been set up to ascertain the reason. This was the first such incident in 14 years of the school’s existence. The CBSE-affiliated school, with more than 4,000 students, is situated on Pragati Path under Chutia police station.
Officer in charge of Chutia police station Raj Kapoor said the matter was under investigation. “We will be able to say something only after taking the girl’s statement. Prima facie we have come to know that the girl had an affair with a boy in her class,” he said.
The school’s day scholars — both boys and girls — could not be contacted for their comments, as the school remained closed due to the statewide bandh in protest against the theft at Rajrappa temple. Hostel inmates also refused to speak.
The girl’s maternal uncle and local guardian, Mohammed Sabir, who resides near Marwari College under Hindpiri police station of the capital, said he had never expected the girl to do such a thing.
“My niece has been staying in the hostel for the past two years. She secured a good rank in both the final examinations of Classes VI and VII. She had returned from Calcutta last month after spending her summer holidays with her parents. I had taken her on a sightseeing trip to Ratu fort and a few other places a few days ago. She seemed well and happy,” he said.
