Tech society on NIT campus - Student access to Industry information

Jamshedpur, Jan. 8: After BIT, Mesra, National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, would have an Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) — a students’ society on campus.

Apart from the students of the institute, working professionals in the city can also benefit from the IEEE.

The IEEE is an non-governmental organisation that helps people with technical knowledge in the field of electronics, electrical and computer engineering.

The professional association works toward the advancement of technology.

“The club members can take part in various activities like industrial visits, workshops, conferences and seminars to augment the classroom learning through this association.

“The association would expose the students to advances in electronics, electrical and computer engineering and give them an opportunity to interact with experts in fields of aerospace and nano technology,” said a student of the technical institute.

IEEE would also provide an opportunity to its member to take part in seminar and conferences organised in any other part of the country.

“Members can rely on IEEE for technical and professional information, resources and services. The club provides a platform for sharing of opinion, discussion on a particular field at seminars and conferences where industry experts also take part,” added another student.

Through this club students would get an idea about the industry. Industry interface among students will increase and professionals would share knowledge with the techies at congregations.

IEEE has some 3.75 lakh members, including around 80,000 students in over 160 countries across the world.

It has some 1,616 student branches and 452 student branch chapters at colleges and universities of 80 countries.

The members said the organisation’s electronic lib-rary has some 1.7 million documents that is accessible to its members and as the college has the students’ branch they can also access those information.

Students can access their published journals and ma-gazines online and benefit from it. Professors at NIT said they were trying to have a students’ branch for long at the institute and finally they have one.

“It is an honour for us to have a branch of this reputed organisation here. The working professionals from Tata Steel, Tata Motors and other corporate houses can now join this club and avail its facilities,” said Dr S.S. Prasad, the branch counsellor.

He said at present they would be providing membership to around 50 people which would be increased after in future.

According to him, IEEE is the world’s largest technical society, that provides the members with industry’s essential technical information, networking opportunity and career development tools.

Apart from NIT, Jamshedpur, BIT, Mesra is the only other engineering college in Jharkhand that boasts of an IEEE student branch on its campus.
