Nawagarh (Angara), May 7: A day after the students of Alice Institute of Technology went on the rampage, beating up officials and destroying two-wheelers, a promoter and general secretary of the institute moved the state government asking for its undertaking of the institute, or allow him to sell it off.

Vijay Chandra, the promoter, said Ranchi University and the government were responsible for yesterday?s backlash because of their step-motherly attitude towards the institute.

Meanwhile, the students today submitted memorandum to Governor Syed Sibtey Razi and chief minister Arjun Munda, demanding an immediate improvement of the condition of their hostel, appointment of qualified teaching staff and publication of results of ?management quota? students of the first batch (2003-2007).

Currently, the institute is running classes for another two batches: 2004-08 and ?05-?09. Vijay Chandra wonders why the students are blaming the institute management, at the same time expressing helplessness to arrange private finance for the improvement of the institute.

?Around a year back, the state government had approved a sum of Rs 35 lakh for the institute. In fact, chief minister Arjun Munda himself announced it. On the basis of this we put down our ideas (the things we wanted to do) in the prospectus. Suddenly the amount was withdrawn, without giving any specific reasons for it. I will write a letter to the government requesting them to either give an undertaking for the institute or give me permission to sell,? said Chandra.

He also informed: ?We had applied for a Ranchi University affiliation in 2003. But it was delayed by a year. We got a temporary affiliation for a year in 2004.?According to him, every batch should consist of 180 students, out of which 100 are admitted after examination and counselling. Remaining 80 seats are filled internally ? under ?management quota? -- by the college itself.

At present, the first batch has 65-70 students, the second batch: 150; and the third, 70.

But Chandra complains: ?A session of the Ranchi University is late by one-and-half years. As a result, we now have 250 students while the number of seats for all the three batches is 540. Why will students get admitted in an institute where the university moves at a snail?s pace?? Chandra said.

He argues that the I-year examination for the 2003-07 batch was held in November 2005, instead of 2004 and the results of which were published in February 2006. ?Then also, the Ranchi University said they would not declare the results of the ?management quota? students,? he said. The Cambridge Institute of Technology (CIT), another technical institute in the state capital faced a similar problem, he informed. ?We filed a case in this regard in the high court,? he added.

Ranchi University officials said the matter is being looked into. ?Till now there has been just one inspection of the Institute. The matter is being looked into and we will clarify it soon,? an RU official said.
