Name the president of an African nation who was a light boxing champion, a swimmer and a rugby player. If that has you scratching your head, what is the full form of TED?

Those who pride themselves on their general knowledge (GK) quotient got a run for their money at the 3rd edition of annual Anurag Singh Mastermind Inter-School Quiz at St Xavier’s School in Ranchi on Friday. While these two queries stumped participants as well as the audience (correct answers: Idi Amin of Uganda and technology, entertainment and design), quiz buffs sailed through many posers.

Nineteen teams — each with three members — kick-started their grey cells to tackle offbeat questions of quizmaster Kaushik Banerjee.

The quiz, which is dedicated to the memory of Anurag Singh, a St Xavier’s School alumnus killed in an accident in January 2011 en route to the US, never had a dull moment.

While the quizmaster continuously tested the participants with googlies, they could answer some and rest they passed either to other teams or to the audience.

After the preliminary screening, six teams — DPS Ranchi, St Xavier’s School, Doranda, St Xavier’s School, Bokaro, DAV Public School Hehal and Bariatu, and Surendra Nath Centenary School, Ranchi qualified for the final round.

However, spectators took the quizmaster by surprise.

They not only could identify a picture of Nirad C. Chaudhuri, but were also able to correctly say the name of Elizabeth Taylor when asked which Hollywood actress once said, “Others collect art, I collect husbands.”

Abhineet Aman, Agni Mitra and Aditya Kumar from DPS, Ranchi, bagged 35 points and walked home with the winner’s trophy.

The excitement was pulsating when DAV-Bariatu, and St Xavier’s, Doranda, were tied at 30 points each.

Then, DAV-Bariatu scored the all-important extra point in the tie-breaker when they were asked in which recent film Rajnikant acted in a dual role. By replying Kochadaiyaan correctly, Jagriti Jha, Abhilash Chaudhary and Ashutosh Singh of DAV-Bariatu became first runners-up.

Saurabh Goenka, Anurag Singh and Swapnil Ghosh of the host school had to be content finishing third.

Each member of the winning squad got cash voucher of Rs 750 for buying books.

Students of the first and second runners-up teams also got vouchers worth Rs 500 and Rs 250 each, respectively.
