Ranchi, Dec. 9: A 29-year old tribal woman was paraded naked by villagers this afternoon in Manhou under the Khunti police station area in Ranchi district for marrying a boy from another community.

Members of the village panchayat, which gave her the ?punishment?, for defying traditions, also cut off her hair and flogged her in public before stripping and then parading her. The incident took place at around 4 pm today.

The police have named the girl?s father as the main accused. Khunti deputy superintendent of police Madhusudan Bari said the girl was in love with a Ghasi boy. ?They had an affair for about two months. The villagers knew about it and were opposed to the idea. About a month ago, there a fight broke out between the families of the girl and the boy,? said Bari.

?Matters came to a head today when the couple disclosed that they had got married in court. Once they produced the marriage certificate, the villagers went berserk,? Bari said.

According to police sources, a panchayat was called and the girl was ?tried? and ?sentenced?.

?The police got to know about the incident quite some time after it happened. The boy told us about it,? they said.

?In a normal case, the girl?s father would come rushing to the police pleading to save his daughter. But no such thing happened. We are sure that the entire incident took place after the consent of the girl?s family,? said a police official.

Police said: ?We took the girl to a hospital. She is in a state of shock, but she is out of danger. An FIR has been lodged against the villagers and the girl?s father is the prime accused,? officials said.
