Jamshedpur, March 15: City-based women groups are set to launch a door-to-door campaign to spread awareness about the decreasing sex ratio of women.
At a meeting of the Mahila Samiti at BPM School in Burmamines, the speakers expressed concern over the reducing sex ratio of women and discussed the necessary steps to be implemented to bring it on a par with that of men.
“In India, for every 1,000 men there are 912 women. This is mainly due to foeticide. We are determined to improve this situation,” said Jharna Mukherjee, president of Mahila Samiti.
Mukherjee said abortion was the main reason behind the dwindling population of women in India. If an ultrasonography report indicates a female child, women are often forced to abort it. The husband and family members of women are solely responsible for this crime.
“We will try to explain that abortions have an adverse effect on health,” said Mukherjee.
Mukherjee said they plan to kick off their door-to-door campaign from Burmamines.
“We will inform them about the reducing sex ratio of women and the dangers they face in the society. If needed, we will speak to husbands and wives separately,” said Mukherjee.
Kanaklata Mohanty, executive member of Mahila Samiti, said, “Being the sole bread earners, husbands often take their wives for granted. This should not be the case. Men and women should share equal responsibilities.” Mukherjee also stressed on the necessity to educate women and encourage them to work for their living.
Mukherjee said they would soon convene another meeting, along with other active women organisations, in the Singhbhum belt.
