Marwari College: Tough choice

Ranchi, June 25: The cut-off marks for entry into Intermediate science subjects has increased.

The popular choice for students still remain science, followed by commerce, said principals of city colleges here.

This year, the cut-off marks at St Xavier’s College in science stand at 88 per cent while in commerce it was 80-85 per cent. Last year, the cut-off was 85 per cent for science and 75 per cent for commerce.

“We have found that science is still the popular choice among students. This year, due to the high percentage of marks scored by the students, the cut-off marks are quite high,” said St Xavier’s College principal Father Nicholas Tete.

“Nowadays by opting for science, students are thinking not only of medical and engineering but also other career choices like bio-technology,” Tete added.

At Marwari College, the cut-off in mathematics was 89 per cent and in biology 88 per cent. In commerce, the cut-off was 73 per cent. Last year, the cut-off in science was 80 per cent in mathematics and 74 per cent in biology. Classes will start from July 6.

Principal of Delhi Public School J. Mohanty admitted that the percentage had gone up this year. In science, the cut-off percentage in the college this year was 88 for the morning session and 85 per cent for the evening.

Principal of Nirmala College Sister Pricilla said that this year students from other states like Orissa, Bengal and Chhattisgarh have also applied for admission in science streams apart from local students. “We received 1,500 applications in science stream this year. The cut-off was 70 per cent. Last year, the cut-off in science was 68 per cent,” she added.

The number of application forms sold for science this year has naturally increased. In Xavier’s, 3,000-4,000 forms were sold in science followed by 2,000 for commerce. Last year, the college had sold around 1,500-2,000 forms for science stream. At Marwari College, 1,186 forms have been sold in science stream (biology).

The total number of seats offered this year would be 320 in science (for boys) and 320 in commerce.

Principals of other schools offering Plus Two also pointed out that 1,500-2,000 forms had been sold in science this year, with cut-off marks at 88 per cent.
