Jamshedpur, July 13: Even as the residents of the city boast of being the sports capital of the state, the death of mathematics teacher of DAV Public School, Adityapur and his daughter yesterday questioned their spirit.
No one bothered to take the duo to hospital after they were hit by a truck on the Kharkai Link Road yesterday afternoon. They writhed in pain lying on the road for almost half-an-hour till a former student of S.K. Roy, the teacher, offered his car to take them to hospital.
But it was too late. Both Roy and his daughter, Neha Kumari, died.
The first help to the victims came from Roy?s younger daughter, Sneha Kumari, a student of the same school, and one of his colleagues, Sanjay Kumar, a physics teacher.
Sneha and Sanjay reached the spot in the latter?s two-wheeler about 10 minutes after the mishap. They kept on crying for help in vain. No one came forward, even as the victims bled profusely due to head injuries. Sanjay, Roy and his daughters left the school around 2 pm.
?Since it started raining I stopped midway to put on the raincoat but Roy didn?t, as he had left the school wearing it. The time Sneha and I took to wear the raincoat was the difference of time between the accident and our reaching the spot,? said Sanjay.
?We kept on praying for help to each vehicle that passed but no one came forward. I was shocked by the way the passers-by ignored our cries for help. Everyone saw two persons writhing in pain, but none responded. They did not even bother to think that they might also have to face same situation,? said Sanjay.
The first family, according to Sanjay, who came forward to help was that of Dheeraj, a former student of the school. Precious 20 minutes had lapsed by then.
Dheeraj was going somewhere with his relatives in a four-wheeler. Recognising them, Dheeraj stopped the vehicle. ?He took both Roy and Neha to Tata Main Hospital (TMH),? said Sanjay, still unable to recover from the shock. At the Subarnarekha burning ghat, unable to unravel what was being done with his father and sister there, Anshu (11), the youngest ward of Roy, just sobbed. ?Now who will teach me mathematics?? Anshu asked his uncle while others prepared for the last rites.
Maybe Anshu wouldn?t have asked this question had the city residents be a bit more sympathetic.
