Jamshedpur, Jan. 13: Wife of Sourabh Kumar, who was killed in a botched rescue operation during the flash floods last year, is still waiting for justice and the job promised to her by the state.

A harried Priyanka Sourabh today met East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rabindra Kumar Agarwal and demanded immediate action against errant officials.

Members of Jharkhand Human Rights Conference (JHRC) have claimed that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken cognisance of the case and has directed the chief secretary to take action accordingly.

After the death of Sourabh on June 18 last year, the Seraikela-Kharsawan district administration had promised a government job to his wife.

“As directed, I have submitted my resume to the Seraikela-Kharsawan administration. However, I have not been given the job promised to me. I have received Rs 1 lakh from the government as compensation,” said Priyanka.

Administrative officials in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district administration said they had already sent Priyanka’s resume to the state government and officials there were to take a final decision on the issue.

JHRC members said two months had lapsed and the government had failed to initiate action against the errant officials.

“Today, we submitted a memorandum in the name of the chief secretary at the deputy commissioner’s office. We have requested him to register the case under Section 304(A) against officials who were carrying out rescue operations,” said Shivkumar Singh, the JHRC general secretary.

Priyanka, who was a witness of the incident, said: “Rescue officials in a helicopter were using a plastic rope, which snapped. My husband fell off and was killed. The state government should take strict action against the officials who were part of this operation. It was irresponsible.”

Kumar’s death was registered as “unnatural” in the FIR by the officials.

“It seems that the police is trying to save the administrative officials involved in the incident. We fear that the errant officials may destroy the evidence,” said JHRC president Manoj Mishra.
