Jamshedpur: Tatanagar railway station is gearing up for a new look.

Different types of flowering and non-flowering plants will be planted on the station premises. Besides, sohrai paintings on Swachh Bharat will adorn the walls.

Beautification work already started on Monday, thanks to the commercial department of Tatanagar.

According to railway sources, Chakradharpur division had initiated steps to beautify the A1-category station, which witnesses a daily footfall of over 50,000 passengers with over 45 mail and express trains originating and passing through it.

"There will be both flowering and non-flowering plants at the entrance of the station near the parcel gate, which has been closed for beautification purpose," said station director H.K. Balmuchu, adding the plants would further enhance the look of the station.

Local artists have been hired to paint the walls of the station with sohrai paintings. "All the paintings will be based on cleanliness theme. This is our small way to promote Swachh Bharat movement. We are trying our best to please the passengers with the new look," said Balmuchu.

According to Bhaskar, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur division, two fountains would soon start operating on the station premises. "We are engaging an agency to install the two fountains - one at the entrance and another at the parking lot," he said.

The senior railway official further said that this year they would lay emphasis on beautification work and cleanliness. "Scouts and guides of Khasmahal railway school would also be roped in to create awareness on cleanliness at Tatanagar railway station," he said.

Passengers welcomed the initiative.

"The beautification work will not only make the station look attractive, but also ensure cleanliness," said Manish Agarwal, a trader and frequent traveller.

"The painting will definitely enhance the look of the station. It is a great initiative. The station is a gateway to the city, so it should be beautified and maintained," said Meera Sharma, a homemaker.
