Ranchi, March 17: This Holi, expect Mahi masks to add a dash of colour to the festivities.

Hoping to capitalise on the Dhoni glory, shopkeepers are ordering consignments of Mahi masks from Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta for Holi on Saturday.

The masks, along also wigs with long locks and caps with Mahi pictures, are selling like hot cakes. A Dhoni-style wig costs Rs 60, while the masks come cheap at Rs 15 at shops in Gandhi Chowk, Upper Bazaar.

The Dhoni masks which have hit the shops have already been lapped up by people but the demand for such masks is so much that the shopkeepers had to order for more. The masks are expected to arrive tomorrow.

Shopkeepers said masks of gods, goddesses, demons and Santa Claus are also being selling good, but Dhoni masks are the favourite this season.

Lalit Budhia, who owns Bahkti Udgam at Gandhi Chowk, said Mahi’s popularity has reached such heights that even elderly people are asking for his masks and wigs.

“We have stocked on Dhoni wigs and masks, which we ordered from Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta. We have masks made of rubber as well as of plastic. Later in the evening, we would get fresh consignments from Delhi,” said Budhia, hoping the sales to pick up. “We also have Chinese and demon masks on sale.”

Rita Kumari, who was out purchasing a mask for her son, agreed that Dhoni masks are hugely popular. “My son is looking forward to dress up like Dhoni this Holi. So we gave into his demand and thought of purchasing the appropriate mask and wig for him,” she added.

Nearby, a shopkeeper, Vishnu Sharma, said Dhoni is facing a stiff competition only from Hanuman as the Hanuman masks have also become the latest craze for children of all ages.

“The animated film, Hanuman, has left a lasting impression on the young minds so much that they want to dress up like him.“There are also varieties of Chinese masks,” he said, adding they are unable to match the popularity of the duo, Dhoni and Hanuman.
