Dhanbad: Over 600 alumni of BIT Sindri will assemble here over the next couple of days to take part in a series of get-togethers to celebrate their association with the renowned institution beginning on Saturday.

While more than 400 former students, including 60 from abroad, would be here on Saturday to participate in different functions, another 200 would arrive on Sunday for Round 2 of activities.

On the first day, there will be three events. While 130 alumni of the 1967-1971 batch will celebrate 50 years of their campus debut, another 147 of the 1973-1977 batch will gather to rejoice 40 years of graduation. The third group of 125 former students of 1988-1992 batch will celebrate 25 years of passing out.

On the next day on Sunday, around 200 alumni from 25 batches would take part in the BIT Sindri Alumni Association Global Annual Alumni meet where a number of scholarships are likely to be announced.

The highlight of this year's event would be a pact being signed between the institute and Denmark's Aarhus University to promote education.

With so many former students descending on the town at one go, most hotels and guest houses are already packed to capacity.

To tide over the crisis, the institute's director, D.K. Singh, a 1988 batch passout, has offered to share his bungalow with a few alumni. They include Anil Singh of 1964 batch and Ramesh Yadav of 1971 batch. While Singh is the president of the North America Chapter of BIT Sindri Alumni Association, Yadav is the vice-president.

"This year's event is much bigger than other years since more former students would be attending. The pact with Denmark's biggest university is also a reason for such a huge turnout," Singh said.

BIT Sindri Alumni Association secretary Sweta Kumari (1994 batch) said, "While the 1967-1971 batch's function would be held at Digwadih Officers' Club of Tata Steel, the 1973-1977 batch would assemble at BIT Sindri Deshpande auditorium. The event to mark the silver jubilee of the 1988-1992 batch would take place at a hotel."

On Sunday, the Global Alumni Meet would be held at BIT Sindri campus with registration beginning at 9am. "During the event, five scholarships are likely to be announced," Kumari said.

BIT Sindri Alumni Association president Shashank Shekhar Garuryar, a 1974-1977 electronics and communication engineering student said, "I will reach on Saturday. Being back on the campus is something very emotional."
