Jamshedpur: As many as 40 express, 12 passenger and 13 MEMU trains were cancelled on the Howrah-Kharagpur and Kharagpur-Tatanagar route on Sunday because of upgrade of the signalling system in Khara-gpur.
Some daily trains that did not run were Tatanagar-Ho-wrah Steel Superfast Express (Up and Dn), Howrah-Titlagarh Ispat Express (Up and Dn), Howrah-Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express (Up and Dn), Shalimar-Kurla Express, Tata-Howrah Steel Superfast Express (Up and Dn) and Howrah-Ahmedabad Express (Up and Dn).
A SER spokesperson said entire list of revised timings for the 16 days' upgrade work between November 4 and 19 had been posted on www.serailway.gov.in.
"Prior cancellation announcements were also made at all important junctions under SER," a spokesperson said. To help people get refunds, a separate ticket counter was opened at Tatanagar.
Many city residents who had work in Calcutta left for Howrah on Saturday itself.
Santragachi halt plea
Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Sunday wrote to SER general manager S.M. Agarwal requesting a halt at Santragachi for mail and express trains between Howrah and Tatanagar. Cop-ies of the letter have been sent to railway minister Piyush Goyal and the Railway Board.
