Jamshedpur, Dec. 2: In an attempt to express solidarity with victims of Bhopal gas tragedy, students of the steel city will launch a signature campaign on December 3 — the day on which the mishap took place in 1984, killing more than 20,000 people.

Thanks to the efforts of Mines Minerals and People (MM&P) — a national-level organisation working for communities affected by mining activities — school students will get an opportunity to express solidarity with those affected by the Bhopal gas tragedy.

MM&P authorities have appealed to students of various schools to participate in a signature campaign and observe a two-minute silence in memory of those killed in the tragedy.

An award-winning documentary film, Bhopal Express, directed by Mumbai-based filmmaker Mahesh Mathai, will also be screened on that day.

MM&P will also display posters on the Bhopal gas tragedy in various public places across the city, said Xavier Dias, director of MM&P.

According to Dias, the awareness campaign will be launched to welcome participants of a “Greenpeace Rally”, which will pass through the city on December 13.

Greenpeace, an international organisation, with headquarters in Amsterdam, has been working on environmental issues for the past several years.

The rally, which will start from Calcutta on International Human Rights Day on December 10, will culminate on January 3 in Hyderabad.

More than 10,000 social and environmental activists from across the world are expected to participate in a meeting to be held in Hyderabad.

“The objective of the rally is to make people aware of environment related issues,” said Dias.
