Jamshedpur, May 19: The soaring temperature over the past week dipped thanks to the Nor?wester which hit the city this afternoon, bringing the much-needed relief from the sweltering heat.
The half-an-hour downpour uprooted several trees in the city.
The Nor?wester, which was accompanied by strong winds, uprooted trees along the Marine Drive, Kadma-Sonari Link Road, Circuit House area and Telco.
The low-lying houses bore the brunt of the weather as water flooded the areas.
But it was a relief for the people and they spilled into the streets to enjoy the shower. The steel city recorded 24.6 mm rainfall which brought the temperature down by two degrees.
On Wednesday, the temperature was 42.1 degree Celsius which came down to 40.5 degree Celsius. The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 98 per cent.
Earlier this week, the temperature of the steel city had gone up to 45.1 degree Celsius.
Four persons had died of sun stroke and several were treated in hospitals and clinics for heat-related complication.
The local Met office said that easterly wind, which helps in formation of clouds, was dominating the Singhbhum region.
?The easterly winds helps in moisture incursion into the atmosphere. There are chances of more rainfall in the next two days,? an official said.
Water gushed in several houses at Refugee Colony near Golmuri and some low-lying suburb areas, causing problems to the residents in spite of the temporary relief.
Pay-loaders were pressed into action to remove the uprooted trees in some localities to ease traffic congestion. The usual water jam after showers brought traffic to a standstill on the busy Kalimati Road in Sakchi.
Water gushed into several shops along the stretch.
The shower, which lasted for about half-an-hour, brought relief to the people who came on to the streets to enjoy the weather.
Some of the families were seen enjoying the showers at Telco Colony and some gathered on terrace tops to revel in the downpour. Families also drove along the Marine Drive to get the feel of the rain and the cool breeze.
?The shower has brought the temperature down. We can at least sleep comfortably in the night. We are hoping for another spell of rain in the evening,? said a resident of Bistupur who was waiting for a cool relief.
He added that the Nor?wester usually hits the city in May.
