Dhanbad: Bokaro police on Sunday began a three-day display of gold and silver jewellery to help SBI locker customers identify their stolen valuables most of which were recovered last month after the December 2017 robbery.

The display was organised following an order from a Chas court to hand over the ornaments to owners under the supervision of a magistrate.

Bokaro SP Karthik S. said out of the 71 locker holders invited, 55 had turned up. The valuables, he said, would be kept at city police station till Tuesday for identification.

"We are currently tagging the jewellery with the names of those who are claiming it. We will later ask the owners to come with purchase receipts and other documents to prove ownership," said Karthik.

He added that in case of a dispute, a decision would be taken by the court.

Shyamal Mitra, owner of Locker 1/45, welcomed the police initiative. "All locker holder were given sufficient time to identify their valuables today (Sunday). I identified three gold chains."

R.K. Jaiswal, another locker holder, said he found it difficult to identify his family's gold chains, rings and necklaces because they all looked similar. "I don't have any complaint against police though because we were given enough time and space."

A gang, led by one Hasan Chikna of Sahebganj, had targeted 76 lockers (five were empty) in the administrative branch of SBI between December 23 and 25. So far, 13 people have been arrested, including Firdausi Bibi, the wife of the gangster. She was nabbed from Malda in Bengal with a chunk of the booty.

The SP recently told reporters that 3.5kg of gold, 6kg of silver and Rs 1.67 lakh in cash had been recovered. The main accused, Hasan, and his lieutenants Mohammed Akbar and Mohammed Shamim are still on the run.
