Jamshedpur: In a unique virtual get-together with their Israeli counterparts over Skype, students of Kasidih High School picked up the art of making sambusak, a popular Isreali street food stuffed with chickpeas, ground meat, cheese or potatoes, and taught them how to make samosas in return.
The city students interacted with students from Ibn Sina Mixed School, Tamra, Israel on Tuesday as part of the British Council-accredited International School Award which makes partnering with a foreign school and learning about other cultures an important requirement for the accreditation.
The online conversation between Class III and IV students left the Kasidih High School students thrilled.
"We learnt that sambusak are good appetisers and takes less time to prepare especially when you have surprise guests and you need something to offer in a hurry. I think I can help my mother make some sambusak in a couple of days. It's easy and interesting and the stuffing can be anything," said Harshpreet Kaur, a Class IV student.
The students of both the schools will now work on a common project on food culture especially street food.
Kasidih High School is all set to organise a food festival this weekend where students will participate with their mothers. The documents of this festival will be sent to Ibn Sina Mixed School which must follow suit to keep the exchange programme alive.
"Since we talked food we also discussed fasting. We told them the occasions when we fast and they also shared how they fast in the month of Ramadan. We also learnt that there are three primary languages-English, Hebrew and Arabic that they speak while we have so many but we told them of English, Hindi and a few regional languages," said Mangaleshwar Pandey, also a student of Class IV.
On Wednesday students of Classes IX and X will interact with Ghobeiry Mixed Intermediate School, Beirut, Lebanon and discuss women empowerment and gender sensitisation.
Kasidih High School will also participate with schools in Ghana, United Kingdom and United States under the ISA award programme.
